Vaginal Dryness

By All_In on Mar 9, 2011 at 1:31 PM

Immediately after orgasm, my wife's vagina goes completely dry. It makes intercourse uncomfortable for her, she doesn't like lubricants. Before orgasm there is no lack of wetness. Is this normal? And is there anything besides using lubricant that we can do to remedy this?

If your wife is not yet menopausal, this post-orgasm dryness reflex is most unusual, particularly since she has normal, robust lubrication up to the point of orgasm. Short of durable lubricants (for instance, silicone-based), which she prefers to avoid, it's not easy to explain or treat. If she is menopausal, the most likely explanation is estrogen deprivation, in which case low dose vaginal estrogen therapy (these products are not systemic, or full body dose, but only rejuvenate the vaginal and vulvar skin) may help the vaginal lining to continue lubrication post-orgasm. Or, whether pre-or post-menopausal, try integrative therapies by consulting an acupuncturist or homeopathic clinician.

I have seen women with the same complaint. It is possible that after your wife experiences orgasm, she is completely satisfied and it is difficult for her to remain aroused and focused on sex. (Most men experience something similar after ejaculation.) The lack of arousal will cause a decrease in her vaginal lubrication. So if you continue to have intercourse for more than a few minutes, her vagina will become dry. Lubrication after her orgasm will allow you to have pain-free sex until you have been satisfied. Try using your fingers to apply, or you can apply to your penis before resuming intercourse.
