Partner with Mild Asperger's

By Ann M. on Mar 28, 2012 at 12:36 PM

I've submitted questions here before about my inability to communicate with my husband about sex via any of the usual means. (Conversation, books, anatomical tours). He's a brilliant man, so I was puzzled, to say the least.

Now he's been diagnosed with mild Asperger's. (A surprise, as he's highly functional and is a well-regarded professor).

Any advice on communicating with a partner who has Asperger's?

People with Asperger's do not "connect" with others as easily. They respond well to rules, and are usually very rigid about these. This also means that they may be very rigid about their rituals and activities including what pleases them. Sometimes working with a therapist to speak about expectations and communication can be helpful if he has not responded to clear and explicit communication.
