- Y chromosome
One of two chromosomes that determine a person's sex. Men have one Y chromosome and one X chromosome, while women have two X chromosomes. Exceptions include cases of intersexuality.
- yeast infection
A common type of vaginal infection in women, which results from an imbalance of healthy bacteria in the vagina. A yeast infection is a type of vaginitis. Risk factors for a yeast infection include: douche, HRT, the birth control pill, pregnancy, menopause; and anything that compromises the immune system, such as lack of sleep, getting sick or unmanaged diabetes, HIV or AIDS. Symptoms of a yeast infection may include: genital burning in or around the vagina and/or during urination; redness in the genital area; and changes to vaginal discharge, including a cottage-cheese-like appearance with no odor. A yeast infection is treated with antibiotics or over-the-counter products. In rare cases, men develop symptoms of a yeast infection.
